I was talking about this subject with a friend yesterday while we were washing vegetables from our favorite veggie stand. She's committed to using Microdyne, which she says has more crucial ingredients than just iodine. I'm on the fence. Like you, I'd just as soon peel the outer leaves of a cabbage. I do wash lettuces such as Romaine in Microdyne, though I've only just started doing this after three years in Mexico. I was (duh!) rinsing off the Microdyne until she pointed out that the rinse water might be more suspect, but my motives were aesthetic: I was concerned the stuff would affect the taste, especially in salads. But I wouldn't be surprised if you're right about the produce we buy in Tucson being the same as what we buy in Mexico, and it's unlikely that when it comes across the border it gets an antibacterial bath. At least it's not irradiated...yet.
